Strange Looking Bloke Wednesday

Was fortunate enough to see Elvis Costello in concert last week. He was doing a small solo tour - just him and about 6 guitars! I loved seeing these stripped down performances, they've been some of my favourite concert experiences.

He played for about 2 hours and did a good mix of classics and newer stuff. He even sat on the end of the stage at one point, without amplification for his voice or guitar, and serenaded the first few rows, while us lot sat in the rafters strained to hear. I don't think I've ever heard an audience so quiet! Plenty of standout moments including a feedback drenched 'Watching the Detectives', and the always moving 'Shipbuilding'

Great concert. Plus he wore a very dapper hat - what's not to love?

Nib Nerd Section: Doodled with a brush pen and then quite a bit of tippex to remove the hat I drew on him and then decided I didn't like.

Paint your Dragon

It's be a while since I updated my progress on the Superdragons project. Pleased to say the artwork is all done and I'm currently varnishing it.

Here's a few pics of 'Scrum the SuperDragon' taking shape...

This was taken when the dragon was still in the 'Dragons Den' - a workspace in the centre of Newport where the public could come and watch us working. I'd put the base colour on and was pencilling in the shapes of the rugby players.

About two weeks in I decided to bring the dragon home to cut down on the time spent travelling in to the Den. Here he is set up in the front room, much to my wife's absolute delight...

Over the next fortnight I worked on positioning the players and colouring them up ready for adding the black  outlines. I put down a coat of white and then put the colours on top of that (usually several coats!)

Here's a section of the dragon almost complete.

And here's a Dr Who themed cameo...

(Pic by Ger Whyman)
After the bulk of the artwork was done, I took it back to the den for final touchups and to get it approved before varnishing. Here I am, drawing the last of the black outlines. Yes, I'm reaching the 'completely cheesed off with this' stage by now. Plus the permanent marker fumes are making me feel slightly woozy. It's a hard habit to break - I'm now on 3 'Sharpies' a day.

Here's the finished dragon. I'll post more pics when it's been varnished.

It's been a much longer project than I imagined! Looking forward to seeing it all finished and out on the Newport streets, where I suspect it will last 0.2 minutes. Ah, but what a glorious 0.2 minutes it will be!

Strip 3382 from 25 June 2009. It's festival season and since Glasto's on at the mo, I thought I'd post this strip from last year. I *think* Glastonbury's about 65 miles from Newport, but don't hold me to it.

Strange Looking Bloke Wednesday

Here's this week's bloke. A quick design for a Strange Looking Bloke Pez Dispenser. Kid's will love it, once they get over the initial nightmares.

Nib Nerd Section:  Done with a Pentel Brush pen, some white paper, scissors, Bluetac and a Spongebob Squarepants Pez Dispenser.

Banksy the Cartoonist

Here's a video of a room at Ye Old Carlton Arms Hotel in New York. The hotel's 54 rooms are all painted or decorated by artists from around the world. The room in the video is by UK Graffiti Artist Banksy.

Pic of Stairwell at the Carlton Arms. Artwork by Banksy. Photo by Darek Solarski.

I've always thought of Banksy as a bit of a cartoonist (in fact it's sometimes used by his critics in a derogatory manner to describe him) and the clip above is a good example of what I would describe as cartoon illustration. I believe he painted it around 2000, and his style has obviously gone through a lot of changes, but to me he seems to still dabble in cartooning. Here's a sketch of his from about 2 years ago, which I don't think would look out of place in the pages of The New Yorker or Private Eye.

and here's some examples of basically gag cartoons brought to life on the streets (of London and Timbuktu!)
Banksy's sketchbook is awash with cartoons and doodles...

And he's not above putting his spin on other people's cartoon creations too...
Apologies to the Rev. W Awdry.
Even bigger apologies to Raymond Briggs!

So, Banksy.. time to 'fess up. You're a cartoonist. And I mean that in a good way!

Strange Looking Bloke Wednesday

Another week, another bloke! A quick doodle done while on the phone. For some reason I get a 'slightly tubbier Robbie Williams' vibe from this one. Think it's the hair.

Don't know what he's doing with his hands either ... answers on a postcard!

Nib Nerd: done with a pentel felt pen.

Saga of a Gag Cartoon

Saga Magazine, in their infinite wisdom, have taken some of my gags. This month's issue features this one...

"I've cleared the morning, but you've got bandits at twelve o'clock..."

Now this is not particularly earth shattering news, but it does go to show that gags that have been unsold for a long time can still get placed! I think this gag dates back to 2006 and had done the usual rounds, getting positive comments but no sale, before settling in the 'rejected' pile, (I've had to rename this the 'not yet sold' pile, since cartooning chum Royston quite rightly pointed out it's a much more optimistic label)

So the lesson here is 'Never give up, never surrender...' Wait, that's a Galaxy Quest quote...

This is from April 2003. It's another of those strips that I don't remember writing or drawing, so it caught me by suprise when i was going through the archives. Made me laugh probably because if you think about it too much, it doesn't make any sense at all. I quite like that!

Strange Looking Bloke Wednesdaylate

A thousand apologies for no Bloke yesterday. Still not well, so the blog's not been on my 'must do' list (No.1 on my 'must do' list is get well).
Here's a bloke - not the most exciting of faces, but he's strange looking at least.

That's enough typing... excuse me while I go have another lie down...

I'm feeling quite under the weather, but have managed to crawl from my sick bed to post this for you lovely people. I thought something illness related would be best suited. This strip is from Jan 2009, when Norovirus was the thing everyone didn't want for Christmas...

Excuse while I stumble back to bed... cough cough... sweat sweat ... bleeeegh.

Strange Looking Bloke Wednesday

Here's a bloke just hanging around. He's part of the Superdragons design I'm working on. I've got the dragon at home for the moment - he's housebroken so it's entirely safe :)

This pic was taken a few weeks ago, but I'll update with more pics when I get the chance.
